Local band Maverick release their second album, entitled “Big Red”, on 26th August with a launch gig being held in The Limelight in Belfast the following day. The follow up to the 2014 debut “Quid Pro Quo” is released through Metalapolis records. The lead-off single “Asylum” which features guest vocals from Jakob Samuel from The Poodles and a guitar solo from former Alice Cooper guitarist Kane Roberts was included on the Friday NI Rocks Show on 15th July. Maverick’s lead singer David Balfour was my guest on the Show on 5th August when we played 4 tracks from the new album. Maverick formed in 2012, releasing the EP “Talk’s Cheap” in 2013 before signing with Massacre Records for the release of “Quid Pro Quo”. Following a tour with The Poodles in 2015 the band completed a move to Metalapolis Records for the new album.

Following a couple of changes of guitarist the current line-up is David Balfour on vocals, Ryan Balfour and Terry McHugh on guitar (the latter wasn’t in the studio for the recording of “Big Red”), Richie Diver on bass and Mike Ross on drums.

Musically “Big Red” sees a bit of a shift in direction compared to “Quid pro Quo”, but for me personally, that is for the better. There are 11 tracks on the album and David made some good choices in picking “Free”, “Asylum”, “Beyond The Gates” and “Forever” to play on the Friday NI Rocks Show on 5th August. Other personal favourites would include “Mademoiselle”, “In The Night” and “Whiskey Lover”.

About “NI Rocks Recommends”

The simple idea behind “NI Rocks Recommends” is to acknowledge and promote some of the great music being submitted to Rock Radio NI. I'll not be giving marks or ratings or analyzing the tracks in great detail; just telling you something about the artist and the album. It’s a personal recommendation to go check something out, not a traditional “review”!

My musical tastes cover most things rock; from the not too melodic to the not too heavy. The albums that I’ll be recommending are those that you’ll hear me playing tracks from on my shows on Rock Radio NI.
