Having been Ozzy Osbourne’s guitarist since 2009 and having released  seven studio albums with his band Firewind since 2002, the name Gus G will be familiar to many. He released his first solo album called “I Am The Fire” last year and on 24th July released his second entitled “Brand New Revolution” through Century Media. This album again brings together a number of guest vocalists, with Jacob Bunton (Adler / Lynam) singing on 5 tracks, Mats Leven (Candlemass / Yngwie Malmsteen) on 3 tracks, Jeff Scott Soto (Talisman / WET etc) on 2 tracks and Elize Ryd (Amaranthe) on one track. Bunton, Leven and JSS had also provided vocals on the first album.

The opening track on “Brand New Revolution” is “The Quest” which, initially at least, is a fast paced, no nonsense instrumental that certainly sets the pace for the 11 tracks that follow.  The first track from the album to be promoted, along with a lyric video, was “Burn” featuring Jacob Bunton on vocals. This track has already been played on the Friday NI Rocks Show along with “What Lies Below” that features Elize Ryd. A video has also been released for “Brand New Revolution”, which also features Bunton. There aren’t any weak tracks, but other favourites would include “We Are One” (Bunton), “Behind These Eyes” (Bunton) and “Gone to Stay” (Jeff Scott Soto).

Gus G was born in Greece in 1980, started playing guitar at age 10 and moved to the USA aged 18 to study at the Berklee College of Music; only to leave within a few weeks to focus on playing in bands. A Firewind demo was released in 1998, before he went on to work with Nightrage, Dream Evil and Mystic Prophecy; releasing a total of 8 albums between 2001 and 2005. During the same period Firewind signed a record deal; releasing their first album in 2002. In 2009 Gus G was invited to audition for the Ozzy slot and has been part of the band since then.

About “NI Rocks Recommends”

The simple idea behind “NI Rocks Recommends” is to acknowledge and promote some of the great music being submitted to Rock Radio NI. I'll not be giving marks or ratings or analyzing the tracks in great detail; just telling you something about the artist and the album. It’s a personal recommendation, not a traditional “review”!

My musical tastes cover most things rock; from the not too melodic to the not too heavy. The albums that I’ll be recommending are merely those that I would buy myself and which you’ll be hearing played on my shows on Rock Radio NI.
